How big?

Most above ground pools are manufactured in two shapes – round and oval. The shape you choose depends largely on your backyard dimensions and personal preference. Oval pools range in size from 8×12 to 18×40. Popular sizes include 8×15, 10×16, 12×18, 12×20, 12×24 and 15×24, along with 20 other sizes to choose from. Round pools, which generally cost less and are easier to install, range from 10-feet to 33-feet in diameter, increasing in size by 3-foot increments. A quick measurement of the area you would like to use for your swimming pool is all you need to choose the perfect size and remember that you can visit our huge showroom at the Pool Factory in Brooklyn, where a knowledgeable sales representative can assist you in purchasing the right size pool for your yard.

Height is another consideration. Most pools are now available with a 52-inch high pool wall, four inches higher than the standard 48-inch wall height. However, families with younger children might prefer a 48-inch pool wall height so children can stand with their heads above water. Also available at The Pool Factory is the Quest Swimming Pool, this model offers a 54-inch pool wall for those who prefer that extra water depth.

The shape of things

Oval pools are available with different support systems which can change the overall dimension of the pool. The three different types of oval pools support systems are the pole pool, the traditional angle brace system, and the space saving buttressless system.

The pole pool is an older style space saving oval pool which is supported with two poles. One on each side connected together with a cable. This outdated design is the least popular support system today.

The traditional angled brace system is also an older design, but offers more support than a pole pool. However, the angled brace system has large triangular braces that run along each side of the pool which takes up valuable backyard space.

The space saving buttressless system offers the best design and support for an above ground oval pool. This system is supported by heavy steel beams and straps that run underneath the pool, eliminating the need for poles or angled braces protruding at each side of the pool. The buttressless system allows more pool size while occupying less space. In addition, because of the sleek design, the buttressless oval pool, like the Heritage Swimming Pool which can be found at The Pool Factory, will fit in many yard configurations giving a clean and uncluttered appearance. Furthermore, it will fit easily into small and narrow yards. Clearly, the buttressless system is the best choice when purchasing an oval above ground or semi-inground swimming pool.

Materials matter

Steel pools are strong, durable and protected by a variety of coatings and finishes. These coatings optimize it’s resistance to corrosion. New manufacturing methods have insured a longer lasting steel pool than in years past.

Aluminum pools are resistant to rust, however aluminum oxidizes and weakens over time. Pools that are made with a one piece rolled aluminum wall can pit, which causes tiny holes to form on the pool wall and liner. With improvements in steel manufacturing over the past 25 years, aluminum pools have become less popular; however, certain aluminum pools like the EZ Panel Pool, Esther Williams – Millennium and Oasis Swimming Pool, offered at The Pool Factory, are far superior to others. These pools are constructed of extruded aluminum and offer inter-locking paneled walls that far exceed the strength of one piece rolled aluminum walls.

Resin is a material that has already proven itself time and again in numerous applications where strength and durability are absolutely essential: pool filtration systems, automotive products, construction, office equipment, & aircraft components. Resin is also 100% non- biodegradable, which means that, unlike steel or aluminum, it will not pit, rust or peel. The Hampton Swimming Pool and Vista Swimming Pool are two swimming pools offered at The Pool Factory that provide wide resin top ledges that will resist bad weather, chlorinated water, and constant use, giving you a maintenance free pool. Resin is the strongest and most durable material used in the manufacturing of above ground pools.

Installation

Most above ground pools are installed on dirt; however, they also can be installed on cement (figure 1), pavers, or blacktop. Some pools can also be installed semi-in-ground (figure 2) making it easier to have a deck built around the pool. Please visit our swimming pool gallery to get some ideas how a swimming pool from The Pool factory can turn your backyard into a cool summer escape and don’t forget to visit our showroom at 50th St. & 1st Ave. in Brooklyn, where we have 20 full sized pools on display.
